We have just learned that on Tuesday, Sept. 17, Sharrow Marine will be announcing the launch of its new propeller series, the Sharrow MX-A™, designed specifically for boats with outboards in the 40-hp to 200-hp range. The new Sharrow props will be made of red anodized aluminum, with starting prices at $1,995 and up.
Heretofore, the revolutionary Sharrow props have only been available for outboard engines from 150-hp and up in stainless steel, with retail prices starting at $5,000.
By using aluminum alloy instead of stainless steel, as it does for its larger horsepower props, and by eliminating the costly investment casting required for stainless steel props, Sharrow Marine is able to substantially lower the price to the consumer for its patented propellers.
This latest release brings Sharrow’s award-winning technology to a far wider range of boaters, including those with pontoon boats or smaller fishing and pleasure boats.
According to Sharrow, the new MX-A series is engineered to deliver the same industry-leading performance benefits that have defined Sharrow’s stainless steel product line. Those features include —
“For small aluminum fishing boats and Jon boats, our new MX-A series in effect makes the fuel tank larger by giving the boat up to 30% greater range at cruising speeds,” said Greg Sharrow, founder and CEO of Sharrow Marine.
“Perhaps most importantly, the new props will allow fully-loaded small aluminum, fiberglass and RIB boats to get on plane faster without having to shift weight forward as is often necessary with conventional props,” he said. “In effect, the MX-A props give 4-stroke engines the low-end thrust that only 2-stroke engines can provide. Because Sharrow props have a remarkable grip on the water, small outboard engines can now have strong reverse thrust, making docking easier and safer.”
“Many smaller pontoon boats are under-powered, and their owners must buy a larger engine to increase load-carrying capacity,” Greg Sharrow said. “Our new MX-A props can save pontoon owners money on a larger engine by creating the added thrust and performance wanted without the expense of a larger engine.”
“Owners of small RIBs used as tenders are forced to buy 4-stroke engines that simply don’t have the thrust necessary to get these vessels on plane easily,” Sharrow said. “With the new MX-A props, RIBs can have 2-stroke thrust when they need it.”
The strength of 2-stroke outboard engines has always been their low-end torque, but their weakness has been relatively high fuel consumption at planning speeds compared to 4-stroke engines. “Our new MX-A series greatly reduces prop slip at all speeds, thereby giving far better fuel economy to 2-stroke engines,” Sharrow said. “Now owners of old 2-stroke engines can have what amounts to 4-stroke fuel economy without the tremendous expense of upgrading to a 4-stroke engine.”
“With the MX-A series, we’re taking the same groundbreaking propeller technology we pioneered for larger engines and making it accessible to boats in the 40-200 HP range,” said Greg Sharrow. “This is a huge leap forward in performance for a segment that has been waiting for three years for our technology to be made available for them.”
The Sharrow MX-A is Sharrow Marine’s first-ever aluminum propeller that is CNC-machined from aircraft-grade aluminum at Sharrow’s Detroit-based facilities. The CNC process mills each prop to unparalleled precision specifications impossible to attain with investment molded casting used by makers of conventional props.
The Sharrow MX-A is designed to fit major outboard brands, including Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Johnson, and Evinrude. Starting at $1,995, Sharrow’s revolutionary propeller technology is now available to a far wider spectrum of the outboard-owning audience.
According to the NMMA, there were about 235,000 outboard engines sold in 2023 that were 40-hp and greater. Now Sharrow props are available for all of them, of which 120,000 can be fitted with the new MX-A aluminum props.
The Sharrow MX-A is now available for order through the Sharrow Marine website, with deliveries expected in 4-6 weeks this fall and winter. Orders are filled in the chronology of their placement. Sharrow expects a surge in orders in the Spring of 2025, making delivery time possibly slower.
Every Sharrow MX-A comes with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and is backed by a Lifetime Manufacturer's Warranty, ensuring peace of mind with every purchase, says the company.
Sharrow Engineering, a Detroit-based advanced engineering and design firm, revolutionized propeller technology with the Sharrow™ Propeller, the first major advancement in propeller technology since the 1830s. Invented by Greg Sharrow, the Sharrow Propeller has solved the most basic problem of rotary propulsion, eliminated tip cavitation and vortices, and offering significant performance gains over traditional propellers.
Sharrow Engineering holds over 150 patents worldwide and is the parent company of Sharrow Marine, which produces and sells the award-winning propeller for the maritime industry. Recognized as a TIME Best Invention of 2023 and by Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards and the 2023 Innovation by Design Awards, the Sharrow Propeller also won the 2024 Clean Technology Transportation Solution of the Year by CleanTech Breakthrough, the 2022 Boating Marine Power Innovation Award from Boating Magazine and the 2020 Miami International Boat Show Innovation Award.
