Boxer's rebellion

In wild scenes at the Melbourne Stadium, Italian migrants stormed the ring after their countryman Bruno Visintin had been beaten on points by the West African fighter Attu Clottey. The ring shook as 500 Italians surged against the ropes chanting: "Bruno, Bruno". A bottle was thrown into the ring but did not hurt anyone. Fans shouted angrily when the referee, Terry Reilly, crowned Clottey the winner. Then they charged the ring.

Scaffold drama

Onlookers gasped as a workman hung by his fingertips from a scaffolding plank six floors up on the new City Mutual Life building at the corner of King William and Pirie Streets, Adelaide, at 2pm. Workmates quickly hauled the man to safety, saving him from a 70-foot fall. The man, David Hamilton, a stone mason, suffered only a cut finger and shock. He was tiling the face of the building when a plank became loose and he slipped.

Sweet deal

Colonial Sugar Refinery Ltd. has secured a £6 million order to supply 100,000 tons of raw sugar to Japan. The general manager, Dr RW Harman announced details of the sale last night. Dr Harman said: "The manager of our sugar marketing division returned from Japan, where he arranged to sell 100,000 tons of Australian raw sugar to Japanese importers and refineries. A certain amount of goodwill was entailed in negotiating this new contract."
